Flatliners (2017) – Film Review

Flatliners is a remake of the 1990 science fiction psychological horror film of the same name. Like the original film, it follows a group of young medical students who stop their hearts for near-death experiences. Also like the original film, it was terrible.

I mean, the original film wasn’t that great to begin with. But who would have thought a remake of a less-than-average movie would be even more awful?

I say this so blatantly because when I was viewing this film, the audience were laughing at all the scenes that were meant to be scary and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t meant to be a comedy. I also went with folk that love horror films and they told me that Flatliners was the worst horror movie that they had ever seen.

This film had no depth, no character development and bad acting. The characters were annoying and I didn’t care if they lived or died. Sure, there are differences in the story arcs each character is individually haunted by in comparison to the original film. But other than that minor change, there really wasn’t much difference.

If anything, I believe it’s the lack of expansion and imagination that fails this film. It tries to stay too close to the original which makes its existence irrelevant. If you want to see a film with cheap thrills and have nothing better to do with your life, give this a whirl. Remakes always have the potential to expand and do better than its predecessor. However, like most remakes, they fail to outshine the original and Flatliners is one of those failures that flatlined hard.
