21 Bridges is an action thriller film starring Chadwick Boseman, which follows a NYPD detective that has been selected to assist the New York City Police Department help find two suspected cop killers.
When a heist goes wrong, two criminals needing to escape go on a cop killing spree so they can flee the scene of the crime. The New York City Police Department, shaken by what has happened, enlist the help of detective Andre Davis to help find the two criminals who are now on the run from the police. Joining Andre on his mission is fellow detective Frankie Burns. Together, the two embark on a cat and mouse chase to find the two criminals, however, the closer that the detectives get to catching the criminals, the more that they manage to find ways to escape. Andre comes up with an idea to ensure that the criminals are unable to leave New York City, but as it turns out, this isn’t the only challenge that gets in the way of the two detectives.
I enjoyed watching Chadwick Boseman as Detective Andre Davis. He showed that he can be very charismatic but also intimidating. He makes you believe his character is a brilliant detective and isn’t someone that should not be messed with. I would also like to acknowledge the supporting cast; Sienna Miller as Frankie Burns, Stephan James as former war veteran and criminal Michael Trujillo, and J.K. Simmons as Captain Matt McKenna, all provided strong performances.
I believe Brian Kirk did a great job directing and thoroughly enjoyed the cinematography aerial shots of New York throughout the film. While 21 Bridges did contain a lot of action sequences, it never went too over the top. The chase scenes were fun, but at times would also be tense, which is what you would want and expect from an action thriller flick. Although I did find myself on the edge of my seat during many action sequences, I also found the storyline and narrative gripping. I cared about what happened to each and every one of the characters.
21 Bridges blends the action and thrillers genres quite well and contains the best elements of both. With a talented cast, gripping storyline, and twists that held me on the edge of my seat and made my heart race, I highly recommend that if you do love your action and thrillers, to go see this film.
21 Bridges is in Australian cinemas now.
