GOT7’s Yugyeom is currently touring globally as part of his 2024 TRUSTY Tour, proudly presented by AOMG, WONDER, Full House Productions and Three Angles Production, in support of Yugyeom’s debut solo studio album ‘Trust Me’.
Yugyeom has been touring since early October and after visiting Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong, it was Sydney’s turn. With Sydney as the only Oceania stop, patrons travelled from all over Australia and some from overseas, all keen to catch a glimpse of the beloved 3rd Generation K-Pop star.
If you think that if you’ve been to one concert, you’ve seen them all, then you’re severely mistaken. There is nothing like a K-Pop concert.
With dedicated fans lined up to enter the general admission seated event as early as 5:30am to secure the best spots closest to the stage, I ended up following the line until the end of it led me to the Roundhouse venue entrance. Each fan in line had evidently already purchased their merchandise prior, as many were equipped with the cutest Yugyeom TRUSTY Tour Pom Pom Keychain (a cute round green ball of fluff with tiny sunglasses on), hanging from their phones and bags.
Inside Sydney’s Roundhouse, everything was already intimately lit in green, but it didn’t take long before a sea of green helped to illuminate the room even more, with many patrons firmly holding and excitedly waving around their official GOT7 lightsticks. I was impressed by the sheer number of lightsticks in the room, as well as the different versions that patrons held, evidence of how long many present have been supporting Yugyeom as an artist. I brought my own Version 2 lightstick with me which I had initially obtained from attending GOT7’s 2019 Keep Spinning Australian Tour, and I was very happy to be using the lightstick again.
The quiet calm in the room transformed into supportive cheers the moment Yugyeom stepped onto the stage. Accompanied by DJ Wegun, Yugyeom serenaded the Sydney audience with his gorgeous falsetto during the ballad ‘When U Fall’, a talent which he continued to showcase throughout the concert, including with song ‘WOOYAYAYA’.
It wasn’t long before Yugyeom displayed his slick dance moves with his more upbeat tracks on his setlist which included but weren’t limited to, ‘Running Through The Rain’, ‘LOLO’, ‘Dance’ and ‘Steppin’, the latter of which turned the energy room up a notch with the assistance of CO2 jets. The 80s vibes were strong with the song ‘Shine’, that had a fun dance break, complete with sunglasses, to Bobby Brown’s hit, ‘Every Little Step’. The sexy choreography for ‘Say Nothing’ and ‘SHE’ also had Yugyeom conjuring deafening screams from his captivated crowd.
When Yugyeom wasn’t singing or dancing, he was affectionately cheeky and charming when addressing the Sydney audience, looking and sounding genuinely happy to be in Australia.
“What’s up Sydney? It’s so hot today.” The line appeared to be sweet and innocent before Yugyeom quickly changed the mood of the room by playfully adding, “You’re so hot today! Today, my heartbeat is so fast.” Yugyeom actually was commenting on working up a sweat from dancing so much, but it didn’t matter because what he said was received with squeals of delight. Acknowledging the fact that many patrons in the room knew his solo lyrics word for word, Yugyeom also warmly stated, “I love you guys. It’s been a long time since I’ve come to Sydney, but everyone seems to know my songs well. I’m really touched.”
Spoiling his Aussie Aghase, Yugyeom even shared a snippet of his unreleased track, ‘One More Dance’ which he mentioned that he was trying to release later this year, adding, “When the song comes out, you have to listen to it a lot, alright?”, and this line was met with more supportive cheers.
Other songs that impressed throughout the night included ‘Ponytail’ and ‘Summer Blues’, the latter of which had its lyrics, completely in English, flying across the big screens so that patrons could sing along. After performing ‘1 MINUTE’, Yugyeom commented on how time flew so fast and that we were already at the end of the concert. However, Yugyeom stated, “I think there’s a limit to what you can say with just words. I’m going to show you guys with my actions, and I’m going to keep trying to improve for you guys. I love you more.” Yugyeom also vowed to try to come back to Australia in two years and lovingly added, “You guys are like light. My light. Thank-you.”
Playing his song ‘WUH’ before jumping into GOT7 songs ‘1+1’ and the epic ‘Hard Carry’ during the energetic and joyful encore, the GOT7 hits were a wonderful nostalgic nod to Yugyeom’s industry origins, as well as a lovely spiritual musical homecoming for many. During this entertaining Sydney concert, what I surprisingly witnessed was an endearing reunion between an established K-Pop artist and their patient, ever passionate Aussie fans. It felt brief, but it was undeniably a beautiful evening.
In his only Australian stop of his 2024 TRUSTY Tour, Yugyeom showcased his talent and finesse, and successfully provided fans with a fun, interactive and intimate solo concert well worth remembering for all who were lucky enough to have been in the same room. Let’s only hope that the next time when Yugyeom does return to our shores, he visits more than just Sydney.
Yugyeom performed in Sydney, Australia at Roundhouse on Friday the 1st of November as part of his 2024 TRUSTY Tour, proudly presented by AOMG, WONDER, Full House Productions and Three Angles Production. He recently played in Manila Philippines and will head to Jakarta, Indonesia and Taipei, Taiwan later this month before concluding the 2024 leg of his TRUSTY Tour in Tokyo, Japan this December.
