Last year, I attended the Brickman team’s exhibition “Wonders of the World” which I was thoroughly impressed by. So, when I heard about “Brickman: Awesome” opening in my city, I leaped at the opportunity to attend and find out more. “Brickman: Awesome” is based on fun interesting facts and records of epic proportions. Despite this theme, the 38 art exhibit pieces still feel eclectic, fresh and is visually fascinating.
Upon entering the exhibition, you’re greeted by a friendly staff member who in turn gives you a little card and tells you that not only are you entering an exhibition, but now you’re on a treasure hunt Where’s Wally style to find two characters, Mr and Mrs Awesome, both whom are cleverly hidden in the art pieces displayed around the exhibition. I loved this idea because I found this a clever and exciting new way to experience an exhibition. Brickman: Awesome is also an interactive exhibition with some stations set up where children are given the opportunity to build Lego pieces to essentially put on display alongside the exhibit pieces.
The exhibition pieces vary in size from small to large, some are great to look at and admire, while some are perfect for a selfie opportunity. Unlike some exhibitions, Brickman: Awesome allows photography, so you can share your love of Lego to all your friends and family to your heart’s content. I love this, because there’s nothing worse than going to something where you’re not allowed to take photos and then feeling like it never happened because you have no photographic evidence to keep as a memoir.
There are many impressive pieces Brickman: Awesome, but my favourite piece of the exhibition would have to be the ‘Icebreaker RSV Nuyina’, Australia’s coolest ship. Not only is it made of 113,098 Lego bricks, but the attention to detail of all the characters on the ship are delightfully entertaining and some little details are even hilarious. I found myself pointing at sections of the ship and cracking up laughing. The Brickman team, led by Lego Certified Professional Ryan McNaught are a smart bunch evidently by their work, with their attention to detail being superb and second to none.
The Brickman: Awesome Exhibition is currently being showcased at the Melbourne Museum Plaza and will be there until the 29th of April. It won’t be here long, so you’ll have to get in quick before it leaves. Tickets are $25 for children 16 and under, concession prices are $30 and adults are $35.
Whether you want to take your children or if you’ve grown up loving Lego, this exhibition is friendly and accepting to all ages and is a wonderful idea for a day out. Each piece on display is an accomplishment by the builders and is definitely worth a visit. I mean, who wouldn’t want to go see over 2 million Lego bricks in the shape of awesome art pieces?
