Molly’s Game is a biographical crime drama film based on the true story of Molly Bloom. Molly Bloom played by Jessica Chastain is a former world-class moguls skier who uses her wits and determination to transform from a complete poker novice to a poker entrepreneur. When Molly is arrested for running illegal poker games and being affiliated with the mafia, she implores Charlie Jaffey, a high-profile expensive lawyer played by Idris Elba to help her with her case.
While I like Jessica Chastain and her portrayal of Molly being smart, a fast learner and quick on her feet, there was still something about Molly Bloom in the film that I did not like. Although I didn’t want anything bad to happen to the character, I didn’t feel personally connected to her either. I understand that Molly’s Game is based on truth, but the storyline, while it started off well, the ending annoyed me greatly. Idris Elba and Kevin Costner who plays Molly‘s father are both known talented actors, however in Molly’s Game, they don’t really do anything special either.
I wish I had nice things to say about this film. I’m sure the person the film is based on is probably more interesting in real life. But Molly’s Game itself really didn’t do anything for me. I was severely disappointed in the storyline and didn’t agree with the character’s decisions at all.
