Rampage – Film Review

The Rock seems to be dominating the cinema screens lately and I’m quite particularly fond of that charismatic man. So, when Rampage was released, I wanted to go see it simply because Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was in it. And it did not disappoint.

Rampage is an action, adventure, sci-fi film loosely based off the video game series of the same name, their basic premise revolves around lab accidents and monsters. Despite being based and inspired by the video games, this film has its own identity and story.

The film’s plot follows the character Davis Okoye played by Dwayne Johnson who is a primatologist to albino gorilla, George. When an experimental dangerous pathogen randomly infects three different animals including George, Davis the primatologist and a geneticist played by Naomie Harris must try save Chicago by stopping the monsters from destroying the city.

While I do love The Rock, I think that Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s performance as Harvey Russell, the government agent was the stand out performance of the film. Don’t get me wrong, Dwayne Johnson delivered, but I consider him always good, energetic and consistent on screen.

Despite the CGI being good with some scenes being comedic and entertaining, Rampage isn’t really a film to write home about. While I did find it entertaining, having lots of action sequences and seeing The Rock on screen, there’s not much else to it. Rampage is the kind of action film which isn’t so plot heavy nor requires much thinking to follow. While the film did not disappoint for me, it was also quite forgettable. If you want to see some light entertainment, then this is the film for you. However, if you’re looking for a film with depth, I’m sorry, but Rampage isn’t it.

This is one of those films, like Kong: Skull Island, that is so ridiculous that it just works! Loved it.
