Johnny English Strikes Again – Film Review

When I first heard that there was a new Johnny English film in the works I thought ‘Really? Do we need more of those?’ Johnny English Strikes Again may be the third installment in the Johnny English franchise, but the film is quite stand alone, and was easy to follow.

Rowan Atkinson returns to his role of MI7 agent Johnny English, whose retirement from the spy world is cut short when a cyber attack on the MI7 database reveals the identity of every active MI7 operative. Everyone except English. Johnny is reunited with his partner Bough, played by Ben Miller. Together they must travel to France and investigate the origin of the attack, and the hacker is behind it. But it won’t be easy, as Johnny encounters some resistance for the beautiful Ophelia, played by real life Bond girl Olga Kurylenko.

If you know Rowan Atkinson, you’d be more than familiar with his goofball, dimwit humor, much to the like of Mr. Bean. Taking place 15 years after the first Johnny English film, a lot has changed in that time. Especially in the tech department. The film takes full advantage of this, with English often taking the low tech approach, with varying results. But at the end of the day, English always manages to come though and save the day, often with hilarious results.

Now I’m not saying that this film is fantastic, but you have to take it at face value. It’s supposed to be good clean fun, for the whole family, and that’s exactly what it is! I had a great time, and thoroughly enjoyed the onscreen chemistry of English and Bough. And the best thing? The run time, it’s 90 minutes of fun, no filler or rubbish, and a story line that keeps you guessing, and holds your attention.
