Django Unchained – Film Review

I have a confession to make, I have seen “Django Unchained” 3 times already and I still hadn’t written a review for it until now. But this was because I was left beyond words, as the film is so amazing. And there are only so many ways to describe “amazing“.

Django Unchained is an epic revenge romance Spaghetti Western film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino.

In short, it is the story of a slave by the name of Django that goes through hell fire to save his one true love. If you want the long version, it is the tale of growth, love and determination in a world full of prejudice, hate and suffering. Set in 1858, the film also highlights racism and slavery.

The casting is brilliant. Jamie Foxx plays lead character, “Django“, Christoph Waltz as companion, dentist turned bounty hunter, “Dr. King Shultz“, Leonardo DiCaprio as excessive slave owner, “Calvin Candie“, Kerry Washington was great as “Broomhilda Von Schaft“, and Samuel L. Jackson in an epic role as “Stephen“. They are all amazing in their roles. Not one actor outshone the other. Instead, they all were brilliant together in a solid performance as a team.

The film pays tribute to 1966 film “Django” and 1975 film “Mandingo“. Franco Nero even makes a cameo appearance in once scene by asking Django to spell his name, just like how he was asked in his film. The movie also uses several pieces of music that originated from the 1966 Django film.

I thoroughly enjoyed the soundtrack as well and have always enjoyed Tarantino‘s music selections. I feel like I would love to raid his music collection and see what inspires him that hasn’t made it to any of his films yet.

Although those with weak stomachs will squirm at the sight of this film and be offended by the racial slur used, Quentin Tarantino must be doing something right as he has outdone himself with Django Unchained now being his highest-grossing movie to date.

I personally {if not obviously after three viewingsLOVED this film! I’m already a big fan of Tarantino, so I knew I would like the film – but not this much! If you enjoyed Tarantino‘s past films such as “Pulp Fiction” and “Kill Bill” then you will love Django Unchained.

Django Unchained is the perfect film that will entertain, shock, humour, touch and surprise you. Despite criticism, Django Unchained has a lot of heart and will go down as one of my all-time favourite films. A definite must-watch.
